JAPANESE AKITA (INU)

Shape

The Akita Inu has more of a fox like facial feature shape with ears that are pointed forward with a slant to them. Their eyes are of almond appearance in shape. The Inu is muscular, but they have a slimmer appearance because of their build.

AMERICAN AKITA (AKITA)

Shape

The Akita has a broad head with ears that stand errect. Their eyes have a deeper set than the Inu. They are very muscular and are larger in appearance than the Inu.

Size

Females average 23 to 25 inches at the shoulder and weigh an average of 85 lbs.  Males average 25 to 28 inches at the shoulder and weigh an average of 100 lbs.

Size

Females average 24 to 26 inches at the shoulder and weigh an average of 90 lbs.  Males average 26 to 29 inches at the shoulder and weigh an average of 115 lbs.

Color

Inu's come in brindle, red and white. Despite the color, Inu's have white/light cream undersides that run from their chin all the way to the underside of their tail. The Inu cheeks, sides of their muzzle and their inner legs must also be white/ light cream.

Color

The Akita does not have a designated standard coat color, nor a standard pattern or marking.The Akita can be found with or without a white mask or a blaze on their foreheads. They may have an undercoat color that varies from the color of the top coat.

Personality

The Inu is known for their trait of being independent. They are most happy when given a task or job to do. They are protective and loyal They are not well with strangers and they become aloof. For some owners, this can be troublesome.

Personality

Like the Inu, the Akita is protective, independent and loyal, but not as suspicious of strangers if they have been socialized early on and moreover if the stranger has been invited into the home properly.
